Service Description
CORE 3: Story CORE is the third workshop in the series of four CORE curriculum workshops. This workshop builds on the work from Physical CORE and Character CORE, and begins to deepen improvised stories by exploring character objectives and throughlines. Students learn to develop an awareness of tone, beats, theme, arch, and reincorporation. Impro makes an important distinction between plot and story: defining plot as the events that happen in the narrative, and story as the emotional journey taken by a protagonist. Impro believes the best narrative improvisation comes from discovery, not invention, and that staying connected to your ensemble is the best route to telling a satisfying story. Emotion creates story; relationship creates story; strong wants create story; even silence and movement (or stillness) creates story. After completing Story CORE, the instructor will meet with each student to discuss his or her classwork at which point the instructor will provide feedback on the student’s progress. Unless held back by absences (more than three is grounds to repeat any given CORE class) or behavioral issues disruptive to ensemble building, students will be invited to participate in the next available CORE class in sequence.
