PEARLS is an on-going workshop for teenage girls, especially “at-risk” teenage girls. The focus of the workshop is the following:
- To increase self-esteem and confidence
- To equip teenage girls with life survival skills
- To assist in emotional and psychological healing
- To teach responsibility and accountability
Fun Time
Fun time is an opportunity for the adult staff (comprised of women) to bond with the girls. The rationale behind this is that many of the participants may not have parents who spend quality time with them. Fun time includes physical and/or group games, such as improvisational games or any other game designed to build trust. It is an opportunity for the girls to laugh, talk, and bond.
Share Time and Arts & Crafts
Share time is an opportunity for the girls to talk. Each girl gets a designated time to talk and then we have an open forum where everyone shares as much or as little as she wants. Examples of topics:
- Taking Control of emotions
- Becoming Good Stewards of money
- Building Self-Esteem
Incorporated into Share Time is some type of arts and crafts activity that correlates to the shared topic
Big Sisters and Accountability Partners
Each teenage girl will be assigned an adult big sister. The big sister will serve as a mentor. Each teenage girl will also be assigned an accountability partner (Pearl Pal) who will be a peer in the group. Each girl’s Pearl Pal should encourage her in reaching her goals.
