This class takes on the challenges of improvised narrative. Students utilize the skills learned in “Beginning” and “Improvising from the Neck Down” and apply them to the task of inventing stories on the spot.

Student improvisers will learn:

  • the basic elements of narrative and how to apply that framework to improvisation.
  • the give and take of the improv stage. -the magic of cooperative story-telling with your scene partners.
  • to work extensively through the narrative to make your improv more compelling and rewarding.
  • to deconstruct scenework and examine what makes it work and what doesn’t.
  • to elevate the level of your play and simultaneously give it a real point of view.
  • to recognize and develop your “audience brain”.

prerequisite: Foundation II or instructor approval

Instructor: Jack Jernigan
Duration: 8 weeks
Cost: $299

Your body knows what to do before your brain does. This class helps you recognize and truthfully use what your body gives you on stage. Physical connections, distance, movement, breathing, silence, noise and even “mistakes” all inform your purpose and motivation in a scene more than what is spoken aloud. Together we’ll find new ways to approach your improv, help to notice and break limiting habits, and learn to be comfortable with yourself on stage… all in a safe and constructive environment.

Foundation I is a great workshop for someone who has never taken improv, as well as someone who is looking to learn a new improv style. This class focuses on the basics of improv, how to give simple, clear information to get a scene started, how to be changed by information given to you, and mostly to get out of your head, leave your inner critic at the door, and have fun on stage.
